(updated March 7, 2024) No. Don't file an amended tax return only to correct third-party information. How do I amend my tax return? (updated March 7, 2024) Complete Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return PDF, as soon as possible. Find tax forms or publications by visiting IRS.gov/forms or calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). Send your completed Form 1040-X to the address based on the state you reside in (found in the instructions for Form 1040-X). You can also electronically file your Form 1040-X. How can I find an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center? We have centers located throughout the country. Find the center nearest to you. I don't have a copy of my original tax return to help me amend it. What can I do? (updated March 7, 2024) You can order a transcript of your tax return. You also can get one by completing and sending us a Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return PDF. You can get a copy of your tax return by completing and sending us a Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return PDF. We charge a fee for return requests. If an accountant or some other person prepared your return, they may have a copy of your return. What do I do if the information is wrong? You don't have to amend your tax return if the information is wrong. Instead, contact whoever reported the wrong information and ask them to correct it. You don't need to contact us. I reported the information but I reported it incorrectly. Can I call the IRS to correct my return? (updated March 7, 2024) We can accept your information over the phone for incorrectly reported information if the mistake didn't increase or decrease your tax. However, you should file an amended tax return if you didn't report the information, or misreported it in a way that increased or decreased your tax. The information is wrong because someone else is using my name and Social Security number. What can I do? See our identity theft information to find out what you can do. You also should call us and let us know. Why did it take the IRS so long to contact me about this matter? We match the information you report on your tax return with information reported by employers, banks, businesses, and others. This matching takes several months to complete. What do I need to do if the information is related to a state relief payment, financial assistance allocated under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Acts, or similar language? (added March 7, 2024) If you received a Form 1099-G or 1099-MISC for a non-taxable relief payment there is no action required. If there has been a determination that the payment is taxable, complete Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, as soon as possible.
