The Statistics of Income Bulletin is issued quarterly by the Statistics of Income Division of the Internal Revenue Service. This report provides the earliest published annual financial statistics obtained from the various types of tax and information returns filed, as well as information from periodic or special analytical studies of particular interest to students of the U.S. tax system, tax policymakers, and tax administrators.

Sole Proprietorship Returns, Tax Year 2021 PDF

For tax year (TY) 2021, there were approximately 29.3 million individual income tax returns that reported nonfarm sole proprietorship activity, a 3.4% increase from 2020. Total receipts reported by nonfarm sole proprietorships increased 16.4%, while deductions increased 14.9%, and profits jumped 22.0% to $411.3 billion in 2021. In constant dollars, total receipts rose by 11.3%, deductions rose by 9.4%, and profits increased by 16.6%. Total profits as a percentage of business receipts were 22.0% for the year, up from 21.0% for the prior year. The professional, scientific, and technical services sector remained the sector with the largest share of profits at 24.1% with profits increasing by 18.2% to $99.1 billion. All sectors saw increases in profits, with the largest percentage increase in the transportation and warehousing sector, which increased 43.5% to $24.9 billion.
