COVID Tax Tip 2020-41, April 15, 2020

Many people are receiving Economic Impacts Payments to help with the effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Among people getting payments for $1,200 are those who receive Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), survivor benefits, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), non-taxable veterans benefits, and Railroad Retirement benefits. This includes those who don’t normally file a tax return and are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.

Here are some things for these folks to know about the payment:

  • Eligible Social Security (including SSDI and SSI), Veteran and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries will not need to file a tax return or provide information to receive a payment.

  • Even though these beneficiaries are not typically required to file a tax return, they will still receive a payment.

  • Social Security (including SSDI and SSI), Veteran and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries who don’t file a tax return who have qualifying children under age 17 must use Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info to claim the $500 payment per child. The IRS needs the dependent information before the payments are issued. Otherwise, their payment at this time will be $1,200 and, by law, the additional $500 per eligible child amount would be paid in association with a return filing for tax year 2020.

  • Economic Impact Payments will be sent automatically to this group of people the same way they receive their Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), survivor benefits, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Veteran, or Railroad Retirement benefits.
