One or more of your claimed dependents is not eligible for you to take the Child Tax Credit for that dependent.

Solution

For a Dependent to be eligible for the child tax credit, the dependent must be under the age of 17 for the entirety of the tax year you are filing.

This means that your dependent could not have turned 17 during the tax year that appears on your tax return.

To qualify, dependents must have been 16 YEARS OLD, younger, for the entire tax year.

On page 1 of Form 1040, review the Dependent section and uncheck the "child tax credit" box, in column (4), for the dependents that do not qualify for the credit.

Make the correction(s) and resubmit.

If you are making a payment, you may have to re-date Step 2, Section 5.
