SOI tax stats - Individual income tax returns

The individual income tax returns Bulletin article and related statistical tables are published in the SOI Bulletin and contain summary statistics based on a sample of individual income tax returns (Forms 1040, 1040-A and 1040-EZ, including electronically-filed returns) filed during the calendar year. Two versions of this data are made available during the year and they are described below:

  • Preliminary data — These data represent estimates of income and tax items based on a sample of individual income tax returns filed between January and late September of a given processing year. These returns are then weighted to represent a full year of taxpayer reporting. In general, some of the returns processed during the remainder of the year may have somewhat different characteristics compared to these earlier ones. Therefore, these preliminary data are best utilized by comparisons made to the preliminary estimates from the prior year. When available, the estimates from the complete year data should be used in place of the preliminary data.
  • Complete year data — These data represent estimates based on a sample of individual income tax returns filed between January and December of a given processing year. The report contains data and analysis on sources of income, adjusted gross income, exemptions, deductions, taxable income, income tax, tax credits, self-employment tax, and tax payments. These estimates should be used in place of the preliminary data when available.

Filing season statistics

Filing season statistics present data from all Forms 1040 processed by the IRS at three critical points during the year: late May, mid-July, and mid-November. Data are presented for select sources of income, deductions, credits, and individual income taxes. The tables are classified by AGI classifications. Data represent the three critical points in the annual filing season and form a baseline for comparison of year-to-year trends.
