IRS, States and Industry Partners Provide Update on Collaborative Fight Against Tax-Related Identity Theft

IRS, Industry, States Take New Steps Together to Fight Identity Theft, Protect Taxpayers

The Internal Revenue Service has joined with representatives of the software industry, tax preparation firms, payroll and tax financial product processors and state tax administrators to announce a sweeping new collaborative effort to combat identity theft refund fraud to protect the nation's taxpayers.

2015 Security Summit: Protecting Taxpayers from Identity Theft Tax Refund Fraud

The IRS, along with public and private sector partners, identified a number of solutions to address identity theft tax refund fraud following as part of the Security Summit effort convened in March 2015. "This agreement represents a new era of cooperation and collaboration among the IRS, states and the electronic tax industry that will help combat identity theft and protect taxpayers against tax refund fraud," IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said.

Speaking at the Security Summit in June, Commissioner Koskinen discussed the Summit's planned initiatives to combat stolen identity refund fraud, stating, "These efforts will provide stronger protections for the nation’s taxpayers and for the nation's tax system."
