Identity Protection PIN Program now available for all taxpayers

The IRS Identity Protection PIN Program can help protect you from tax-related identity theft.

An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number assigned you to help prevent your Social Security number or Individual Tax Identification Number from being used to file fraudulent federal income tax returns.

Join the program, by going to the Get An Identity Protection PIN page of IRS.gov. Then select the Get an IP PIN tool to verify your identity online. This tool uses Secure Access authentication verify your identity. You should review the Secure Access requirements before trying to use the tool.

If you are unable to pass the online process, there are other ways to get an IP PIN. You must get a new number each year.

Be aware of scams and only share your IP PIN with your tax provider.
