July 27, 2022 — The IRS is aware that some payments made for 2021 tax returns have not been correctly applied to joint taxpayer accounts, and these taxpayers are receiving erroneous balance due notices (CP14 notices) or notices showing the incorrect amount.

May 26, 2022 — Today’s Data Book release contains important statistics about the nature of the IRS’s enforcement activities. A fact that is worth noting is that these are point-in-time estimates of the IRS’s ongoing examinations for the respective tax years.

IRS statement — Information returns

May 13, 2022 — IRS processed 3.2 billion information returns in 2020. Information returns are not tax returns, and they are documents submitted to the IRS by third-party payors, not taxpayers. 99% of the information returns we used were matched to corresponding tax returns and processed. The remaining 1% of those documents were destroyed due to a software limitation and to make room for new documents relevant to the pending 2021 filing season.

IRS Statement — Advance Child Tax Credit Oct. payments

Oct. 29, 2021 — In Oct., the IRS delivered a fourth monthly round of approximately 36 million Child Tax Credit payments totaling $15 billion. As part of the continuing process of building out the advance CTC program, which has included outreach to bring in previous non-filers and the launch of the CTC Update Portal that has allowed millions of taxpayers to choose options for their payments, the IRS has also identified certain payees who appear to have mistakenly received advance CTC payments.
