Forensic training

CAAs are required to complete formal Forensic Document training to obtain the necessary skills to authenticate original identification documents presented to them for use in submitting a Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The training must provide skills to effectively recognize fraudulent documents, such as a passport, USCIS photo identification, U.S. driver’s license, foreign driver’s license, birth certificate, visa, national identification card, U.S. military identification card, U.S. state identification card, and foreign voter’s registration card.

IRS does not endorse any third-party provider for Forensic Document training and is not responsible for the content of their websites. We have reviewed capability statements and course material from the third parties listed below to ensure they meet the requirements.

Use of these third-party providers is not mandatory. The IRS does not have a contractual relationship with them and did not conduct a procurement or perform any procurement steps in determining whose information is posted on IRS.gov. CAAs may continue to use basic Internet search criteria posted on the IRS website to identify a potential provider for the required training. It is important to assess the training offered prior to selecting a provider. This includes determining whether the training covers the types of documents required for Form W-7, has a testing component, and the provider confirms they will mail you an original certificate of completion.
