If you're an individual taxpayer, you now have until May 17 to file and pay your 2020 federal income tax. This extension also applies if you pay self-employment tax.

You don't need to file any forms or call the IRS to qualify for this relief – it's automatic. If you need additional time to file beyond May 17, request a filing extension until October 15 by filing Form 4868 through your tax professional, tax software or using Free File on IRS.gov.

An extension to file is not an extension to pay. You should pay all federal income tax due by May 17, 2021, to avoid interest and penalties. Estimated tax payments are still due by April 15, 2021.
