IR-2002-119, Nov. 7, 2002 WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service announced today the selection of David B. Palmer as Chief of Criminal Investigation , the agency’s law enforcement arm. “Dave has an outstanding background for leading Criminal Investigation,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Bob Wenzel. “A 30-year veteran of the agency, he brings vast experience in both law enforcement and government service to his role.” Palmer will report directly to the IRS Commissioner while overseeing a nationwide staff of approximately 4,500 CI employees. CI agents investigate and assist in the prosecution of criminal tax, money laundering and narcotics-related financial crime cases. “Our mission remains unchanged. We will investigate potential criminal violations in a manner that fosters confidence in the tax system and compliance with the law,” Palmer said. “Our top priority will be violations of tax law. But our agents’ financial expertise also is critical in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.” Palmer began his IRS career in 1971 and has held numerous management positions within the agency, almost all within Criminal Investigation. Most recently he held the position of Director of Field Operations for the Central Area within CI. Palmer earned a bachelor's degree in accountancy from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in 1969. He is a native of Dayton, Ohio. X X X
